Statement on the Recent Cancellation of the
“Lack of Freedom of Expression Exhibit”
at Aichi Triennale 2019
「表現の不自由展・その後」及び「平和の少女像」
の展示中止への抗議声明
The “Comfort Women” Justice Coalition (CWJC), a multi-ethnic and multi-national grassroots organization, stands in a people-to-people solidarity with the members of the acting committee of the “Lack of Freedom of Expression Exhibit” at the Aichi Prefecture art festival, Aichi Triennale 2019, and protest against the abrupt termination of the exhibit, including the “Girl Statue of Peace.” This becomes the latest example of a series of official attacks by the far right Japanese government against people in Japan, ROK, other Asian countries, the US, and elsewhere, who quest for a world built upon the fundamental principles of peace and justice.
私たちサンフランシスコ「慰安婦」正義連盟は、国境を越え多民族のメンバーからなる草の根の団体です。私たちは「表現の不自由展・その後」実行委員会の声明を支持し、愛知トリエンナーレ２０１９において、「平和の少女像」を含む「表現の不自由展・その後」展が急遽中止されたことに対し強い反対の意を表します。今回の中止は、平和と正義に基づいた世界の実現を希求する草の根の市民運動に対する、右翼化した日本政府による弾圧の一例であり、近年日本、韓国をはじめとしたアジア諸国やアメリカ等において日本政府が行ってきた弾圧の繰り返しと言えます。
Survivors of the Japanese military sexual slavery system have repeatedly warned the global community that the crime will be repeated again, unless Japan makes an official apology, redress and reparations, preserves the history, educates the next generation, and prosecutes the guilty. Through their official condemnation of the exhibit, Takashi Kawamura, the Mayor of Nagoya City, and Yoshihide Suga, the Chief Cabinet of Secretary of Japan, have privatized the public art show funded by people’s tax to promote their racist agenda, denigrated survivors of exploitation and violence by Japanese empire, and denied the survivors’ basic human right for redress.
日本軍性奴隷制度を生き残った被害者の方々は、日本が公式の謝罪、補償、歴史・記憶の継承と次世代の教育、有罪者の起訴・処罰を行わない限り、同じ犯罪が再び繰り返される危険を、国際社会に警鐘として訴えてこられました。しかし河村たかし名古屋市長は公に今回の展示を批判し、菅義偉内閣官房長官は補助金交付差し止めを示唆しました。これらの政治家は、税金で賄われるパブリックな芸術展を私物化し、自らの人種差別的な主張の促進に悪用しています。これは旧日本帝国により搾取、暴力を受けた被害者の方々の尊厳を傷つけ、基本的人権としての補償を否定することにも他なりません。
It is reported that the organizers of the exhibit have received a large number of annoyance calls and fax messages, which included a death threat stating “we will bring gas,” insinuating an assault similar to the recent attack on Kyoto Animation studio that killed 35people. Instead of investigating the perpetrators of these arson and death threats, the police and municipal government decided to give in and shut down the exhibit altogether before even consulting with the artists.
苛烈な中傷や脅迫の電話やファックスが数多く主催者側に送られ、その中には「ガソリン携行缶を持って行く」など、３５人もの犠牲者を出した最近の京都アニメ襲撃事件をほのめかせた脅迫さえ含まれていたと報道されています。警察や愛知県知事はこのような放火・殺人の脅迫を行った犯人を追跡・逮捕するどころか、逆に脅迫に屈し、出品された芸術家の方々に事前に相談することもなく、一方的に展示を全面的に中止することを決定しました。
Termination of the exhibit is painfully personal for many members of CWJC. Again denying justice to the survivors reopens old wounds and intensifies unspeakable pain and trauma from Japanese imperialism and colonialism suffered in the past by many members and families of the various Asian American communities here in San Francisco. CWJC also includes members from the Zainichi Korean communities, who along with their families are forced to stand in the forefront of the ongoing and escalating far right attacks in Japan.
この展示の中止の報せに、私たち「慰安婦」正義連盟のメンバーも深く傷つきました。サンフランシスコのアジア系アメリカ人社会の中には、日本帝国主義・植民地主義の被害者やその家族が多くいます。今回の中止は、日本軍性奴隷制度の被害者の方々に対する正義の否定であり、私たちの古傷をえぐり、筆舌に尽くしがたい痛みとトラウマを、ますます耐えがたいものとします。また連盟には在日コリアンのメンバーもおり、これらのメンバーや日本にいる家族は、延々と繰り返され、日々激しさを増す右翼の攻撃の矢面に立たされています。
When the Government of Japan attacked our official city memorial in San Francisco these past few years, many people in Japan, including those in the then sister-city Osaka, publicly supported our struggle. In the face of increased censorship and repression, we are determined to strengthen our people-to-people solidarity beyond national borders to realize long-delayed justice for the survivors.
私たちは、ここサンフランシスコで日本軍性奴隷制度の被害者の方々を記憶するために、公式のメモリアルを建設しました。その過程で日本政府が私たちに攻撃を加えてくるたびに、姉妹都市であった大阪をはじめとする日本在住の方々が多数、公の場で私たちの闘いを支持して下さいました。政府による検閲や弾圧がエスカレートしていく今こそ、私たちは国境を越えた草の根の人と人との団結力を強め、日本軍性奴隷制度の被害者の方々に正義が実現するよう、共に闘い続ける決意を表明します。
