San Francisco City College Trustees unanimously votes to honor the “Comfort Women” victims and survivors as it celebrated International Women’s Month.

This March 21, 2019 proclamation is the third one honoring the courage of “Comfort women” victims by a city agency in San Francisco Bay Area on the occasion of “International Women’s Month” in March. The other two proclamations honoring the “Comfort women” victims are the San Francisco Unified School District and City of Millbrae, County of San Mateo, both held on March 12, 2019.

During the month of March in which San Francisco celebrates International Women’s Day, members of the Board of Trustees of City College of San Francisco honored the victims and survivors of sex trafficking imposed by the Japanese military on girls and women from more than 13 Asian countries during WWII, celebrated their courage in bringing this history to light, and memorialized that this moment in history occurred in order to never repeat such exploitation and victimization.

Judge Lillian Sing said, “Official Proclamations from City Agencies are important as it OFFICIALLY declares to the world that rape in times of military conflicts is a crime against humanity, Japan needs to be held accountable for its war crimes, and the world will not allow the “Comfort Women” history to be forgotten.  Just last month, two Chinese women in their early 90s broke their silence & told the world they they were “Comfort Women” kidnapped by the Japanese military during WWII.  We will continue to stand by & fight for justice for the “Comfort Women” and I am grateful the City Agencies are standing firmly with us.”
