On November 30, 2018, The Japan Times decided to redefine two major terms regarding Japan’s role in the World War II era. First, colonized Korean workers who were deployed in Japanese mines and factories are to be described as “wartime laborers” rather than “forced labor” as in the past. Second, the term “comfort women” which The Japan Times has used to describe “women who were forced to provide sex for Japanese troops before and during world war two” will now mean “women who worked in wartime brothels, including those who did so against their will, to provide sex to Japanese soldiers.”
The historical record is clear and unequivocal that as many as 400,000 women and girls from 13 countries in Asia were brutalized and coerced into a system of organized state-sponsored military sexual violence and sexual slavery, a fact well documented by respectable scholars. It’s also estimated that at least 10 million Chinese slaves, 670,000 Korean slaves and 140,000 allied slave POWs were forcibly removed to Japan to work under slave labor conditions.
The Japan Times is abandoning its independence by supporting the Japanese government’s long-standing refusal to face wartime atrocities and the realities of colonial rule. The press has a responsibility to present the historical truth not another example of denialism and falsehood.
Therefore, the undersigned urge you to withdraw these false definitions and return to referring to “comfort women” as sex slaves and Korean, Chinese and Allied POW slave workers as forced laborers.
日本历史最悠久的英语报纸《日本时报》在今年2018年十一月三十日宣布更改兩個与日本二次世界大戰相關的名稱。
第一：二戰時”奴隸勞工”改稱為”戰時勞工”。
第二：慰安婦一詞原本是”被迫為日軍性服務的婦女”。現改為 “戰爭時在妓院工作的婦女，包括那些不願意與日軍提供性服務的婦女”
這次的更改定义不符合歷史証据及學者調查结果。四十多萬個婦女被日軍從十三個亞州国家強征為性奴隸。另外，一千萬中囯人，六十七萬韓國人及十四萬盟軍士兵被強迫綁架到日本為奴隸勞工，過著非人的生活.
《日本时报》不可以放棄報界的言論自由，幫助日本政府隱瞞二次戰爭的罪行。
我們要求 《日本时报》還原歷史真相，不幫日本政府扺賴及說谎言。
